Epaulet Sewn by Hand footwear is our exclusive in-house brand. Each piece is handsewn and meticulously crafted in Maine of the finest leathers and materials.
The Somerset is a rugged 4-eyelet camp moccasin made from tough peanut calico from Horween. The upper is welted to a white Vibram Cristy sole, with the stitched welt covered by a strip of leather for a more streamlined look. This shoe is insanely comfortable and can be worn year-round. If the sole wears out, a cobbler can easily replace it. The moccasin toe is hand-stitched and topped off with raw leather laces, brass eyelets, and a padded footbed. We gave this particular make-up a glove leather liner to ensure that it holds its structure and is as comfortable to wear in cooler months as it is in warmer ones.
We think the rugged Somerset has found a near perfect match in this beautiful Calico leather. This “rough-out” leather is known for its coarse finish and brawny strength, while still being exceedingly easy and comfortable to wear. The exquisite peanut color is slightly lighter than snuff, so it’ll go well with just about any chino or jean you could hope to pair with it. Rough-out will endure all types of inclement weather; we encourage you to wear them hard, but they’ll take to delicate wear just as well.
ROUGH-OUT LEATHER: Simply put, “rough-out” is the reverse side of any full-grain leather. It has been neither sanded nor split, but merely been sewn “inside-out,” so maintains all the durability of smooth leather. This is the primary difference between it and suede, which is oftentimes a “split-hide.” Since one hide which has been split essentially produces double the yield, suede is more readily available and less expensive than its more robust counterpart. Rough-out doesn’t quite have the same soft texture, or velvet-like surface, but it is far stronger. The nappy finish is achieved by abrading the surface of the leather, but not compromising the integrity of the material. The wooly surface makes the leather remarkably stain and abrasion resistant, which is one of the reasons why it's a leather of choice for cowboy boots and leather saddles. MOCCASIN CONSTRUCTION Epaulet Sewn by Hand footwear uses genuine moccasin construction. With this, a continuous piece of leather forms a secure bond around your foot. It's an intricate process that requires extensive hand-labor and years of experience. But the result is well worth it. With true moccasin construction, the shoe can easily mold to the exact contours of your foot - yielding a final product that's extremely comfortable and satisfying to wear.
SIZING Epaulet Sewn by Hand shoes run generally true to size. However, as they feature handsewn moccasin construction, they will conform to your feet. It's important to consider how you'll wear them.
If you intend to mostly wear your shoes or boots with thin socks or barefoot, we'd recommend ordering 1/2 size down from your typical dress shoe size. This would be roughly equivalent to our sizing recommendations for the Alden Barrie & Tru-Balance lasts. So, if you typically wear a 10D in dress shoes, order a 9.5D. The majority of our customers choose to do this.
If you intend to wear your shoes or boots with substantial socks, then we recommend ordering true to size. This would be roughly equivalent to the Alden Leydon and Aberdeen lasts. So, if you typically wear a 10D in dress shoes, order a 10D.
